Program: HiTech Plating, by Mr. Thomas W. Shorts.
 
Thomas W. Shorts, President of Hi-Tec Plating Inc. Currently operating facilities in both North and South Carolina. With a 30 year background in metal finishing will discuss current trends and technologies in the field of functional coatings.  Discussion will include "TDNC"® (Thin Dense Nickel Composite) and "TDC-1"® (Thin Dense Chromium Process) These are two of Hi-Tec Plating Incorporated’s proprietary plating processes that are widely used in many Industrial Applications to fight wear, corrosion, and release problems. Samples will be shown and some successful applications will be discussed.

Technical Talk: "The Unique Role of Metals in Future Optical Fiber Communications" by
Dr. John Ballato, assistant professor in the School of Materials Science and Engineering, Clemson University.

Dr. Ballato received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University in Ceramic and Materials Engineering in 1997. His dissertation was "Sol-Gel Synthesis of Rare Earth Doped Halide Optical Materials for Photonic Applications," performed under Professor Richard E. Riman. He received his B.S. from Rutgers University in Ceramic Science and Engineering in 1993. His thesis was "Fabrication of Optical Fibers with High Rare Earth Concentrations," under Professor Elias Snitzer. Dr. Ballato's research interests include: optical and optoelectronic properties of materials; photonic bandgap materials and structures; rare-earth doping for active and passive applications including lasers, optical amplifiers and isolators; photonic communication systems including free-space, optical fiber and planar integrated-optic systems; electro-optic, ferroelectric, piezoelectric and other mixed-effects in bulk and thin-film materials.

Dinner selection: Baked double-cheese lasagna, fresh vegetable medley served with tossed salad greens with assorted dressings. The dessert will be double fudge chocolate cake. The menu comes with tossed salad greens with assorted dressings and tea and coffee.

"Forensic Case Studies" by Lt. Joe Powell, SLED

Lt. Powell is currently the supervisor of the Trace Evidence department at SLED and has 20 years experience working in forensic science. He has testified over 600 times in the courts of United States and possesses a BS degree in Chemistry.

Annual Business Meeting:  Plant Tour of Lockheed Martin,   Donaldson Center.  The facilities for the repair and airframe longevity program will be toured.  The special metal repairing and service life extension program will be presented.
Mr. Kevin Hutchens will be hosting our visit.  There will be limited space and special requirements for this tour.  The details will be posted on this web site as they become available
Special Instructions: Each person on the tour must be an American Citizen and must have a picture ID. Names must be submitted to our Tour guides prior to the tour. We are limited to a maximum tour group of 40. The members of the OLD South Chapter will be given priority, however, we would encourage all ASM members of surrounding chapters who are interested to apply. Special invitation to the Central Carolina Chapter is extended.

It is important that you contact him as soon as possible to reserve a tour slot. Your tour slot will be confirmed by email or by phone with a map and directions to the facility and the location of the assembly area. It is important to arrive at the facility on time to ensure proper sign in procedures.
